Dr. Katharine Bar is a translational physician-scientist studying novel approaches to HIV prevention and cure. Her molecular virology laboratory elucidates basic mechanisms of virus transmission, pathogenesis and persistence of HIV-1 and other viruses within novel nonhuman primate (NHP) models and curated clinical cohorts. Her current research aims to elucidate the mechanisms of HIV persistence to inform therapy and cure strategies, by (i) characterizing the viral dynamics and host immune responses during virus suppression on ART, (ii) developing NHP models of HIV persistence to test novel prevention and cure interventions, and (iii) developing antibody-based interventions. Through her leadership positions in HIV cure consortia and HIV clinical trials groups, she is committed to driving tangible advances of basic science through preclinical NHP studies and experimental medicine human clinical trials. For the CIAVCR, she co-directs the NHP core and serves on the Senior Leadership Group.
