We are pleased to announce that Jillian Hurst, PhD, assistant professor in Pediatrics, is joining the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) as an affiliate faculty member, effective March 17, 2024.

Hurst is a part of the research faculty in the Pediatric Department’s Division of Infectious Diseases. Her goal is to integrate clinical and basic biological approaches to further our understanding of the host and microbial factors underlying recurrent childhood infections. Hurst's research is currently focused on the role of respiratory microbiome development in susceptibility to acute otitis media (AOM), the most common bacterial infection of childhood.

“Affiliation with DHVI will provide a stimulating intellectual environment. I’m excited about new opportunities for collaborations with DHVI’s cohort of investigators who have deep and complementary knowledge," said Hurst.

Hurst will bring her experience in developing longitudinal cohorts, electronic health records analyses, and growing expertise in microbiome development to assist in projects focused on the development of novel vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics.
