DHVI Investigator receives R21 grant
Congratulations to Dr. Priyamvada Acharya on receiving an R21 grant entitled, “Structure and dynamics of a functional cavity in the HIV-1 Envelope, and its role in conformational changes required for infection”.
This study proposes to use the potent CD4-mimetic HIV-1 entry inhibitor M48U1 to explore the highly conserved "Phe43 cavity" in the HIV-1 Envelope (Env). The Phe43 cavity engages residue Phe43 (thereby its name!) of the CD4 receptor and is critical for HIV-1 entry. These studies will improve our understanding of HIV-1 Env structure and dynamics, which in turn, will impact drug and vaccine design.
In this study, Dr. Acharya will closely collaborate with Dr. Rory Henderson for structure-guided molecular modeling, and with Dr. Mattia Bonsignori for virological assays.
